France residency questions, answered

Clear answers to common France residency questions: investment thresholds, timelines, family, renewals and the path to citizenship, before you begin.

Investment & eligibility

How to get residency in France: where do I start?

Start with the length of your stay. Non-EU nationals who plan to live in France long term need a long-stay visa or a residence permit, as explained on Service-Public.fr. From there, getting residency in France comes down to choosing the route that fits your profile: investment, the talent passport, a startup project, the long-stay visitor visa for passive income, or creating a company. We set them side by side in our guide to French residency routes. The answers below cover each of these routes.

For the investor route, the minimum is €300,000. It must be a qualifying direct economic investment with employment commitments, made in an operating French company. The other routes have their own financial conditions, set out on each programme page.

The €300,000 must be a qualifying direct economic investment with employment commitments, typically in the capital of an operating French company or through new business creation. A passive property purchase does not qualify.

Not through a passive property purchase. The €300,000 must be a qualifying direct economic investment with employment commitments. A hospitality operating project may qualify through its company structure; buying a hotel room or residential property is not the France IDEA route.

The Passeport Talent is designed for investors, entrepreneurs, and highly skilled individuals. It offers a multi-year permit with greater flexibility than standard long-stay visas and a clearer pathway toward permanent residence.

Process & timeline

How long does the process typically take from start to permit issuance?

For the investor route, allow 2 to 5 months* from onboarding to your residence card. *Subject to individual eligibility and decisions by the competent French authorities.

Core documents include proof of investment, financial statements, a clean criminal record, a valid passport, and a detailed business or investment plan. France IDEA prepares a personalized checklist for each client.
Certain steps — such as the biometric appointment and permit collection — require physical presence in France. France IDEA coordinates the timing of these visits to minimize travel disruption.

Family & lifestyle

Can my family members be included in my application?

Yes. Your spouse and dependent children can accompany you on a dedicated “passeport talent (famille)” residence card, which is separate from the standard family reunification procedure. France IDEA prepares your family members’ files alongside your own. Read our guide to the Talent Passport family residence permit.

There is no strict full-time residency requirement for the initial permit, but minimum presence thresholds apply when moving toward permanent residence. France IDEA will advise on your specific situation.

France has both state schools and a wide range of private and international schools, including the global Lycée Français network. France IDEA can connect you with relocation specialists to help choose the right option.

Renewal & citizenship

How do I renew my residence permit?

Renewal is handled in France before expiry. You will need to demonstrate continued investment or activity, updated financial documents, and proof of maintained ties to France. France IDEA manages renewals for existing clients.

After five years of continuous lawful residence, you may apply for a 10-year resident card. Minimum presence in France, civic integration and resources are assessed, and since 1 January 2026 a first resident card generally needs French at B1, subject to applicable exemptions.

You may be eligible to apply, generally after 5 years of actual habitual residence in France; it is never automatic. Holding the investor permit alone is not enough. Residence, integration, resources, conduct and language conditions apply (generally French at B2 since 1 January 2026, subject to exemptions), and naturalisation remains discretionary. France does not require you to give up another nationality, so dual nationality is generally permitted, though your home country’s own rules also apply.
